Essential Oils for Smudging?

As I sat down to begin this blog post; I got nothing.  Absolutely blank stare at the screen nothing.  Hard to imagine that I get to discuss one of my favorite spiritual practices...and nothing.

I just stared at my computer trying desperately to come up with words for this blog...preferably words that formed a proper sentence and oh, bonus if it pertained to the topic at hand...all I could do was think about what was going on with me, personally.  Be it what happened yesterday or concerns and plans about tomorrow....and don't get me started about worries and anxieties far down the road, years into the future!  I know I am not alone in this mindset, but needless to say, I was not very mindful or present to where I was and what I was doing and that never ends well, am I right?  I was ruminating on energy of the past and wondering why I was so exhausted and couldn't focus on this blog.  I knew my intention was clear and my thoughts and ideas were there but they were scattered...like a swirling tornado of scrabble letters in my brain trying to make their way to the playing board, or in this case to my keyboard.  Energy can be your ally and energy can be well, your speed bump.  In this case...mine was the later.

My husband, bless his heart, walks in the room, sees the blank stare on my face and I say to him "I'm trying to write a blog post but I think I used up all my creativity and energy for the day already."  (Note to self...it is only 12 noon on Monday.)  Yes, perhaps it could simply be a "case of the Monday's" but perhaps something can and should be done about this...I'd hate to have the inspiration for a fun and educational blog post...but not the energy to write about it!  What my husband said next could not be more timely; "Is there an oil you'd like me to diffuse for you?  Mandarin Rain, Spiritual Grounding...Love Potion No. 218?"

I think sometimes we get subtle nudges from the universe and then other times we get hit with a ton of (metaphorical) bricks! The answer was in front of me..."YES...OF COURSE...what a wonderful idea!  Why don't I diffuse some oils useful for smudging to clear this stagnant energy and get back to my blog post!"

If you're wondering what oils I chose that did the trick...I'll tell you in a minute!

The act of smudging has been around for centuries.  Webster's dictionary defines smudging as "to smoke or protect by means of a smudge" - not super helpful Webster, but we'll give you a participation ribbon just the same.

To me, smudging is a sacred and spiritual practice where plant material, herbs, incense, and even oils are burned or diffused to create smoke or vapors with intention to purify or cleanse negative thoughts or energy of a person or place.  In my experience smudging has also been used to clear patterns or stagnant energy and create new thought forms and positivity using mantras, prayer, or meditation.

Here is a list of a few essential oils I use personally and recommend for smudging:

Cedarwood Atlas, Organic

Cypress Leaf, Organic

Blue Gum Eucalyptus, Wild

Blue Mallee Eucalyptus, Wild

Eucalyptus Radiata, Organic

Frankincense, Wild

Juniper Berry, Organic

Lemon, Organic

Palo Santo, Wild

Pinyon Pine, Wild

Siberian Fir, Wild

White Sage

Sweetgrass Hydrosol, Organic

Yuzu

Try using a combination of these oils in your diffuser.  I'm confident that your intuition and your nose will lead you to the right combination for you.  Aim for anywhere between 8-10 drops total in your diffuser for essential oil smudging as your goal is to get the oils to saturate the room, much like you would using smoke style smudging.  Run your diffuser in 30 minute sessions, taking a break for 1-2 hours in between sessions until the diffuser is empty or until the scent is gone.  I included links to the oils below if you'd like to read about them and learn more about their unique properties.  I've also included Koru's Organic Sweetgrass Hysdrosol on the list.  This is my go to for personal energy clearing in a pinch, on the go protection and clearing when traveling, in between client interactions, and on my pillow at night.

In my case today, I incorporated 3 sacred essential oils into my diffuser to clear negative energy from my room, home, and probably most importantly from my energetic field itself.  I diffused Organic Juniper Berry, Organic Cypress Leaf, and Organic Lemon. The combination created an uplifting and cleansing aroma, both spiritually as well as mentally.  I used 3 drops of each in my diffuser and ran the diffuser for the duration of writing this blog post.

Many people can be sensitive to the smoke created from burning plant, herbs, or incense used for sacred smudging, essential oils can be a great alternative.  Using essential oils for smudging is sometimes safer too if you live in an apartment, nursing home, or a home with a sensitive smoke detector...trust me...I found this one out the hard way. More than once! Hahaha!!

Have a great Monday everyone.
