Koru Oils Olfactory Training Kit
As a scent based human myself who's transitioned my career from winemaker to professional aromatherapist, I can only imagine the fear and frustration that goes along with losing one of my senses that is so meaningful. My hope is that this kit brings some comfort and hope to those that have lost their sense of smell, whether from Covid-19 or other means.
If you've ever had a cold, you know that one of the symptoms you are likely to experience is a diminished sense of smell. When we eat food, we experience flavor, which is a combination of both our sense of taste and our sense of smell. When our sense of smell is reduced, the flavor of food is greatly affected. This can explain why when you are sick, simply put, nothing tastes good. Fortunately with a common cold, your sense of smell quickly returns. Now imagine getting sick and losing your sense of smell completely, and it staying lost. This is all too often the unfortunate reality for recovering COVID-19 patients.
As you've likely heard on the news or read in medical journals, one of the early symptoms of COVID-19 is loss of smell, also known as Anosmia. Another disorder that can arise is know as Parosmia, which is a change in the normal perception of odors, such as when the smell of something familiar is distorted, or when something that normally smells pleasant now smells foul.1 Instead of a lemon smelling like a lemon, for example, a lemon may smell like rotting cabbage. Another example of Parosmia that has been documented is chocolate might smell like gasoline. Parosmia has been linked to COVID-19 and other viruses, as well as head injuries.2
Losing the inability to smell can have a big impact on our lives. Imagine not being able to smell homemade chocolate chip cookies baking in the oven or enjoying that scented candle that reminds you of your grandmas warm apple pie. The fancy bottle of hand lotion you used to apply at night that smelled so luxurious and made you feel so pampered, well...that's out of the question. What about being invited out to dinner and drinks with loved ones knowing that you won't be able to smell anything you eat or drink, while they just go on about how amazing the wine and food smells. Talk about having an impact on your well being!
When smell and taste are impaired, life loses a lot of joy. We eat poorly, socialize less, and as a result, feel worse. According to a 2016 study published in the journal Chemical Senses, 23 percent of Americans over age 40 experience changes in their sense of smell. This number increases to nearly 1 in 3 of those age 80 and older.3
Smell and taste also serve us by providing us notice about dangers, such as fire, poisonous fumes, and spoiled food. These senses must be at their best in order to keep ourselves and others safe.
The good news is, hope is available. Olfactory training is for those who have lost their sense of smell for an extended period of time. This loss can be due to any number of serious reasons, including COVID-19.
The technique of olfactory training is based on the fact that the nerve affecting our sense of smell, the olfactory nerve, has the ability to regenerate. Exercising the olfactory nerve may strengthen it. It aims to help recovery based on neuroplasticity - the brain's ability to reorganize itself to compensate for a change or injury.4
Koru Oils has created a Smell Kit (Olfactory Training Kit) that consists of smelling four different essential oils twice a day every day. The essential oils in this kit are Rose, Eucalyptus, Lemon, and Clove and are 100% authentic essential oils with each aroma belonging to a different odor family:
Rose Inhaler Ingredients - Rose (Rosa damascena)
Eucalyptus Inhaler Ingredients - Wild Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus)
Lemon Inhaler Ingredients - Organic Lemon (Citrus limon)
Clove Inhaler Ingredients - Organic Clove (Syzygium aromaticum)
Here's how to use your Olfactory Training Kit:
- Pick one inhaler and hold the container under your nose and breathe slowly and deeply for 15 seconds. For most people the aromas of Rose, Eucalyptus, Lemon, and Clove are familiar in their memory. Visualizing and trying to remember what each aroma smells like while performing these exercises will help.
- Take a break for 10-15 seconds.
- Repeat with the next aroma until they have all been sampled.
- Repeat this process twice daily.
The benefits attained by each individual can be quite different and the time it takes to achieve them will vary. It is important to practice these exercises twice daily to get the best results. Each Smell Kit is designed to retain aroma for up to 3 months when used 2x/day. Be sure to close each tube securely after each session. We suggest replacing your Koru Oils Smell Kit every 2-3 months to allow for the greatest aromatherapeutic experience as you retrain your olfactory system.
